Facts Are Facts Part 9.

Day 9 of facts produced from different studies that compares a low fat diet vs a low carb diet for you.

Yesterday you looked at how hunger can ruin your diet and how a low carb diet can reduce even eliminate your cravings.

Today we look at research by Martins LD, et al.

Effecst of the classic low carb diet on the treatment of refractory epileptic seizures. The Journal of Revista De Nutrição, 2012.

Please note that these results were not from a biased study done in order to promote one diet over another. These Facts Are Facts posts are based on the results of over 20 non biased studies.

Researchers and physicians have tested and used a low carb high fat diet type of diet for years in treating epilepsy.

In fact, it has been studied for the treatment of epilepsy since the 1920’s.

One study found that 75.8% of epileptic children on a low carb high fat type of diet had fewer seizures after only one month of treatment!

Moreover, after 6 months, half of the patients had at least a 90% decrease in seizure frequency, while 50% of these patients reported a complete remission.

This is a promising study for you if you or anyone you know has epileptic seizures.

An important note about the study.

In the start of the study, almost all of subjects were malnourished and were below a healthy weight.

Amazingly though, at the end of the study, everyone had reached a healthy weight and improved their nutritional health.

A year after the diet, 5 of the 29 participants remained seizure-free!

Some of the participants reduced or completely stopped their anti-seizure medication.

The summary is this; a low carb high fat diet can help reduce the frequency of seizures in epileptic children. In some cases eliminating the seizures altogether.

I explore the many diets on the market. I looked at the USDA Myplate diet, diets high in protein low in fat and the high fat low carb diet plans.
