Do you have an addiction?

You might think that addiction is because you want the pleasure that the addiction creates but the research may be telling a different story.

It may be that it is avoiding the pain and agony of withdrawals and not searching for pleasure.

Dr. Pamela Peeke, an internationally recognized physician and expert in integrative medicine, nutrition and fitness, noted that eating additions behaviors affects people in varying degrees 1 in 12 adults.

But it isn’t just the overweight and obese, addictive eating is experienced by men and women of all sizes.

Dr. Peeke notes that one of her most challenging patients was a size 4 woman who only ate a discreet amount of cookie dough on a daily basis.

But if you are like most people, refined processed sugars, refined processed fats, and refined processed salt usually is what causes people to become addicted too.

But this post today isn’t just about what causes addictions, it is about what you can do that may finally help you get the upper edge over food addictions.

Your mind and body can do amazing things in order to survive.

But with all the available refined, processed sugars, refined processes fats and salt that you have accesses to today, your survival instincts may be what causing many of the overweight, obesity and health problems today.

You see having access to carbs 24/7 may just be the problem.

Your survival mechanism will burn sugar when there is plenty and store fat for lean periods when food is not so abundant.

But when you are eating a low fat diet, which is the diet most health care practitioners today recommend, you will most likely replace it with carbs.

Since your body burns carbs first it will continue to keep storing fat.

Only when your body goes into a survival mode may be the only way to actually burn your body fat and lose weight.

But just saying, I won’t eat any more refined, processed sugars, refined processed fats and salt is a hard promise to stick too.

Addictive eating may affect you mildly and can easily be modified with changes in the diet or it can affect you with compulsive overeating which may cause significant health problems.

Whether you over partake in cocaine, sugar, alcohol, or sex your brain’s reward center notes that you’re overstimulated, which the brain as not good for your survival, and so it compensates by decreasing your sense of pleasure and reward.

Now you don’t feel anywhere near the pleasure and reward you once had when your addiction started, no matter whether it’s food or drugs.

You develop a tolerance which means that you want more and more of your fix but never achieve the same “high” or “pleasure” you once had.

All the while the cravings grow stronger.

Why do you have a hard time ever achieving your weight loss goals and sticking to them long term?

Because if you don’t wean yourself off of the process and refined foods completely, you will never completely lose the cravings and addiction.

If you follow a very low carb diet and only eat whole, organic vegetables; grass fed or pastured meats in limited amounts; and lots of healthy saturated fats that make up the majority of the calories you consume in a meal then you may finally eliminate your cravings.

I hope you realize that you must eat proteins in limited amounts.

You may struggle with this picture of a diet at first. For example, when you open your refrigerator, what do you see?

You may look at it differently than I do.

I see processed refined sugars in the condiments, sauces, dressings and any type of processed desserts.

I see rBGH or routine antibiotics in the milk which was pasteurized destroying part of the vitamin C in raw milk, encourages the growth of harmful bacteria, and turns milk’s naturally occurring lactose (sugar) into beta-lactose.

Beta-lactose is rapidly absorbed into your body which may result in your hunger returning quickly after drinking a glass of milk.

The frozen meals in your freezer are all refined and most likely processed containing many chemicals and refined processed sugar that you would need a chemist degree to read.

The meats, even if organic, you should know that a truly grass-fed, grass-finished product is superior to organic.

And those eggs are raised in inhumane conditions and fed food not normally found in their natural diet. You should be looking for eggs from pastured, free-range hens.

So if you were to take all those things out of the refrigerator, what you most likely have is an empty one.

I explore the many diets on the market. I looked at the USDA Myplate diet, diets high in protein low in fat and the high fat low carb diet plans.
